We welcome the revision of the Ecodesign Regulation for solid fuel local space heaters (EC 2015/1185).
Solid fuel combustion for residential heating is one of the largest sources of air pollution in Europe, with an estimated 80–90 million EU households relying on it. Ecodesign and Energy Labelling provide the best framework to address the threats that solid fuel heating poses to human health and the environment—just as similar rules have successfully reduced emissions from road vehicles for decades. Burning biomass pollutes both ambient and indoor air, contributes to climate change, drives biodiversity loss, and puts pressure on forest resources.
Following the Consultation Forum (CF) on Solid Fuel Local Space Heaters (SFLSHs) held on 25 June 2025, the Coolproducts campaign—led by ECOS, EEB, Deutsche Umwelthilfe, and Green Global Future—has submitted further comments and observations regarding:
- The costs and impacts of a business-as-usual approach on climate, health, and air quality
- The shortcomings of current measurement methods
- Our proposed solutions
