Finally, energy label reforms begin

Product policies are a big deal, cutting as much energy as the EU emissions trading scheme, and building fuel bill savings of more than €450 for every European home each year from 2020. Energy labels are the ‘pull’, against Ecodesign’s market-based ‘push’. But as products have grown more efficient, labels became a “victim of their own success”, as Commissioner Canete said today; increasingly held back by a compromise agreed in 2010 to add plus symbols after the A rating to reward top models. Today, in Juncker’s firstEuropean Commission legislative proposal, we began a move back to an A-G system, which polling shows is much clearer for shoppers.
