So, it took nearly two years, but here they are: the Ecodesign rules on environmental performance and information requirements for domestic washing machines and dishwashers that are sold in the EU market. These have been set under the Eco-Design of Energy Using Products Directive.
As a result, washing machines and dishwashers below energy class A will no longer be sold from December 2011. While these requirements have not been set at a very ambitious level (as there were not many products left below the A class anyway) we are happy that at last some measures have been adopted this year and the ecodesign policy process is moving again.
After the nine product regulations were adopted in 2009, the EU Ecodesign policy had been kind of stuck in delays and uncertainties for months. These measures also launch a dynamic process leading to more aggressive requirements in 2013 (ensuring that consumers make significant savings on their bills). They will also make sure that all washing machines include a cold wash program (at 20°C), so that consumers have a choice in saving even more.
In addition, instruction manuals will have to include tips on how to reduce energy and water use further. While quite modest in scope, these additional measures are a first step that can pave the way for more ambitious water consumption and information requirements in the future.
The regulations also set water consumption limits. Drinking water scarcity is becoming a global challenge, so it is a good signal that this aspect is also tackled. Consumers should also rest reassured, if they fear that limits on water consumption could limit washing performance: the regulation also sets a minimum cleaning performance level for all machines.
Now that these new rules are in place, we hope the EU Ecodesign process is back on track and we will see many more pending measures (for boilers, water heaters, air-conditioners, vacuum cleaners, computers, directional lamps, etc.) being passed in the next months.
